Zaha’s Moonsoon: An Interior in Japan

01 June - 01 July

12:00 -18:00

Zaha’s Moonsoon: An Interior in Japan will explore some of the design strategies employed in Zaha Hadid’s iconic first interior project outside of the UK, the Moonsoon restaurant and bar in Sapporo, Japan (1989-90).

In this exhibition, Moonsoon is contextualised within the increasing fiscal spending on design in 1980s Japan, which saw a boom in interiors designed by international postmodern designers. The design of the interior is Western and looks at the period in Japan when foreign influences, especially from the West, were embraced. The exhibition also reveals how elements of the design came from from Zaha Hadid’s Arab heritage and highlights the collaborative nature of any architectural project, as we mention the other designers and artists who worked alongside Hadid in this design project.

The audience will be presented with sketches, models, paintings, and magazines that mark the development of Moonsoon - from the initial brief into one of Zaha’s greatest interiors.

Opening hours: 12pm to 6pm, Thursday to Saturday from 20th April to 22nd July 2023.
Free admission, no booking required.
