The Heights of London’s Underground

11 June 2023

13:30 -15:00

A short film about North London’s overground sections of the Northern Line High Barnet Branch and its predecessor the Northern Heights Railway. Originally a steam railway from Edgware to Finsbury Park, with branches to Alexandra Palace, and the town of Barnet, the railway rose to 300 feet above London.

This film uses old maps, railway plans, photographs, and pictures, and photographs to tell the story of how this railway shaped this part of London, the romance of its buildings, bridges, and tunnels. How its construction turned farmed fields into suburban streets.

With an introduction from its Executive Director Oliver Meek and a chance to hear about its history and future plans our host venue is the Phoenix Cinema. An independent single-screen community cinema in East Finchley, built in 1910, it has one of the most beautiful auditoriums in the country and is grade 2 listed.
