PLAY THE CITY

01 June 2023

12:00 -19:00

Over the course of a day, the AA Lecture Hall will be transformed into a gaming café by the AA Landscape Urbanism Taught Postgraduate programme. Addressing the issue of participation and co-creation of urban projects through the lens of spatial design, game creation, data collection and AI deployment, the students have developed a series of digital and physical games to provide a critical but playful way to explore current planning and legislative systems in the UK, to empower people to design and experience space, and reflect on their history through the common ground of the game.

Items shown will include several gaming environments that let people know about the UK's complex planning legislation, food policy, local history and more. The games borrow logic from all-time classics such as Risk, and Chess amongst others and let participants play the roles of developers, community organisations or farmers. Through a mixture of board games, projective mapping and an online platform it creates an immersive and fun experience which is informative, fun and ultimately engaging.
