‘Love Letters to the Buildings’ Free Exhibition Tour – Lime Grove

From artist-curator Sal Pittman, ’Love Letters to the Buildings’ celebrates the history of London College of Fashion (LCF), UAL with a range of engaging and innovative audio-visual and site-specific found-object installations inspired by psychogeographic and archival-led research, in a grand bidding-farewell to some of LCF’s buildings ahead of our move to East Bank, part of Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in September 2023.

Join us at Lime Grove on Saturday 10th June at 2pm for a free exhibition tour led by artist-curator Sal Pittman and London College of Fashion MA student and curatorial researcher of ‘Love Letters to the Buildings’, Anastasia Kyriakaki.
One of the oldest parts of the building is the mulberry tree in the courtyard, its believed that it was planted as a 10-year old sapling in the year the building opened in 1904. The building was originally purpose built for the Hammersmith College of Art, which had a tradition of education and training in art, craft and building professions. The school was the vision of William Lethaby (involved in the Pre-Raphaelite and Bauhaus movements) whose philosophy was that ‘Teaching should foster both a proper understanding of tools, materials and function and also the notion of art as service rather than as expression of genius’. To honour the technical skill and theatricality that is so synonymous with this building, the exhibition here features a scaled-up replica toile which has been specially commissioned to hang down the staircase. The work is based on a toile in the LCF archives, made by Joy Lewis, a student in the 1950’s which is on display at John Princes’ Street.
