Legacies of the British Empire

25 June 2023

11:00 -13:00

What do historic adversaries Gandhi and Churchill have in common? They both have statues in Parliament Square. Join us on a guided walk and discover the story of colonisation and decolonisation through statues, monuments and architecture. We will see memorials of allies and adversaries in silent conversation with each other. What does this tell us about identity, representation and protest in contemporary Britain?
As we unpick the past, we will reflect on how the built environment is used to construct memory and impact the future. We will discuss how laws such as the Retain and Explain Bill make movable elements into permanent fixtures and how power is challenged and interrogated by occupying space. Britain’s imperial power is relegated to the past but its legacy connects places across the world. On this walk, you will discover what London has in common with India, South Africa, America and beyond!
