On this one-night event Alison Brooks and Associate Ceri Edmunds will discuss the role of the Biennale in architectural culture, the ideas behind the Home Ground installation and the projects it represents. The short-talk will be followed by drinks to encourage conversation among attendants.
Alison Brooks Architects are opening our office for visitors to experience ‘Home Ground’, our response to Hashim Sarkis’ curatorial approach to the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale: How Will We Live Together?.
Home Ground is a 3m x 5m high urban model representing ABA's housing projects as a terra-cotta relief revealing earth-bound arcades, halls, commons, forums, and workspaces that ground each building. These spaces of community suggest a condition of reciprocity between the private realm of housing and their public context. Casting them into the surface of a table invites the audience to coalesce momentarily and begin new conversations. Is it possible to re-conceive housing as civic building that offers a more generous, complex, and poetic framework for living together? Bringing the practice’s disparate projects together in this installation, our aim is not to create the ‘ideal city’, but rather to reflect the contingencies and complexities that shaped each project.
